Von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort: Honoring 75 Years of Legacy and Renewal

For those of us who cherish history, tradition, and the magic of places where the past lingers in every detail, the von Trapp family’s story feels like a fairytale. And now, as the beloved Trapp Family Lodge celebrates its 75th anniversary, it’s stepping into a new era with a name that fully embraces its legacy: the von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort.

This thoughtful refresh is more than a name change—it’s a love letter to the family’s Austrian roots, the art of hospitality, and the enduring power of storytelling through place.

If you’re like me and adore family traditions and heirloom histories, you’ll appreciate this detail: the original lodge dropped the “von” from the family’s surname, mirroring their identity as the touring Trapp Family Singers. But as the lodge has grown into a sprawling resort filled with history, gardens, and mountain views, reclaiming the “von” feels like a homecoming—a quiet nod to the family’s origins and the European charm that makes the property so special.

And then there’s the bell tower. The lodge’s new logo highlights this iconic feature, which miraculously survived a devastating fire in 1980. It’s a symbol of resilience, continuity, and the spirit of gemütlichkeit (that cozy, welcoming warmth that they do so well here).

The lodge’s anniversary celebrations are infused with the same reverence for history that makes places like this feel so magical. A winter sculpture exhibition, curated partnerships with heritage brands, and induction into Historic Hotels of America all honor the lodge’s legacy while inviting visitors to make their own memories.

It reminds me of my conversation last year with Kristina and Sam Von Trapp for the Grandma’s Silver podcast, where we explored how their commitment to land stewardship, family traditions, and, even then, the mark they were leaving on their family’s legacy. You can wander the property, sip beer from their on-site brewery, or ski the same trails that generations of guests have enjoyed—all while feeling like you’ve stepped into a storybook.

The lodge’s new tagline, “Come for Our Story. Leave with Your Own,” captures the heart of this refresh. Whether you grew up watching The Sound of Music or discovered the lodge later in life, there’s something undeniably enchanting about walking the same halls and hiking the same hills as the von Trapp family.

In a world where historic places are disappearing, the von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort stands as a beacon of what’s possible when we honor the past while looking toward the future. It’s a reminder that the best places are the ones that grow, adapt, and continue to welcome us back, year after year.

Want to dive deeper into the von Trapp family’s story? Listen to my episode with the family, where we chatted all things legacy and landscape. And if you’re craving a little nostalgia, maybe it’s time to plan a trip to Stowe—where the hills are still very much alive.
