The Art of History: How Mottahedeh & WILLIAMSBURG Bring 18th-Century Design into Modern Homes
As part of my collaboration with the WILLIAMSBURG brand of Colonial Williamsburg, I’m excited to share more about how the Mottahedeh collection beautifully blends 18th-century American design with today’s style. These heritage-inspired pieces not only bring history to life but also add a touch of timeless elegance to any home.
The Historical Significance of Tableware in Colonial America
In Colonial America, tableware was more than functional—it was a status symbol. Wealthy American households often displayed imported porcelain and china from Europe and Asia, showcasing their access to global trade routes. These finely crafted pieces were reserved for special occasions and family gatherings, making them central to the early American dining experience.
Just as early Americans cherished their tableware, today’s modern homemaker can appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship behind vintage-inspired decor. Whether you’re setting an elegant table or simply collecting timeless pieces, these heritage designs offer a connection to the past.
The WILLIAMSBURG collection by Mottahedeh is renowned for its meticulous attention to detail and historical accuracy. Many pieces in this collection are based on items found in Colonial Williamsburg’s archives, which houses an extensive collection of 18th-century artifacts.
One standout example is the Duke of Gloucester collection. In the year 1770, William Henry, the Duke of Gloucester, commissioned a stunning dinner service from the Royal Worcester company that showcased his deep passion for nature. This exquisite collection embodies the rococo style, featuring an impressive palette of 19 vibrant colors (listen the episode to hear the norm!!), gilded accents, and a striking turquoise rim. A platter from the original service, now part of the Foundation’s collection, inspired the creation of a beautiful reproduction.
Fun Fact: Did you know there’s a street in Colonial Williamsburg that makes reference to the family name and title “Duke of Gloucester”, too?
The Art of Reproducing History
Creating accurate reproductions involves more than just mimicking old designs; it requires a deep understanding of historical craftsmanship. Mottahedeh collaborates with historians and artisans to ensure each piece remains true to its 18th-century roots.
How to Incorporate Historical Pieces into Your Home
Integrating historically inspired decor into your modern home can add a unique layer of charm and sophistication. Here are some ideas for incorporating the Duke of Gloucester collections and other WILLIAMSBURG pieces into your decor:
Elevate Your Dining Experience
Enhance your dining table with pieces like the Duke of Gloucester platter or a beautifully decorated serving bowl. Pair these items with simple, modern table linens and glassware to create a balanced look that honors both historical elegance and contemporary style.
Host a Tea Party
You’re never too old for a tea party, and this time of the year, when the weather cools, there’s no better time to embrace colonial tea culture. Pull out the Duke of Gloucester tea set for your next gathering!
Use Your Displays
Don’t reserve your historical pieces for special occasions. Wendy said it herself—use those pieces! Display items from the Duke of Gloucester collection or others as part of your everyday decor. For example, a decorative vase or bowl can serve as a striking centerpiece in your living room or dining area.
